Sculpture

Born in Zimbabwe, Gedion Nyanhongo was taught the art of stone carving by his father, Claud Nyanhongo, an original member of the Shona Stone Sculpture Movement, which began in the late 1950’s. This foundation instilled both a technical discipline and a deep respect for cultural storytelling.

After an apprenticeship with the internationally acclaimed sculptor Joseph Ndandarika, a friend of his father and a member of the first generation of the Movement, Nyanhongo embarked on a solo career in 1988. His debut exhibition was in 1989 at the Mabwe Gallery in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Nyanhongo has since exhibited around the world, including: England, France, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, South Africa, U.S.A, and Zimbabwe.

As a premier master sculptor his work is displayed publicly across the United States and included in permanent collections such as that of the Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Phoenix Zoo, Champungu Sculpture Park in Loveland, Colorado.

Sculpting exclusively from indigenous stone which he imported from Zimbabwe, Nyanhongo carves and polishes entirely by hand using the traditional methods.

His sculpture reflect the essential human need for connection, support, and love. They honor the spirit and heritage of his ancestors and share their stories with audiences around the world. Nyanhongo is devoted to creating sculptures that advance the Movement into the 21st century, while maintaining the rich stories and culture of his ancestors.
